The full name of the church known as "the Rotund" is St Holy Martyr George The Victorious. Located in the center of Sofia in the yard enclosed by Hotel Sheraton and the Presidency, it is one of the oldest churches in Bulgaria. Built in the beginning of the 4th century during the reign of emperor Constantine The Great, the Rotund is the oldest monument of antiquity in Sofia and the only building in Bulgaria from Roman times that has survived in its entirety. Actually it ia part of a huge antique complex in what once has been Serdika, the favourite city of Constantine The Great. Still a part of the main street "cardo", remnants from antique buildings and the Roman heating system hipocaust may be seen today. During that period the Rotund functioned mainly as a baptistery. In the 5th century part of the building was destroyed by the Huns but in the 6th century during the reign of emperor Justinian I it has been restored as a church till the 14th century. At that time the Ottoman Turks captured Sofia and turned the church into a mosque. Years after the liberation, the Rotund is entirely restored and under the plaster laid by the Turks are discovered unique murals in five layers, three of which are of great value. The firs layer is from the Roman period with floral motifs. The second and most precious is from the 10th century. It depicts angels with covered hands and is final example of monumental medieval painting in Bulgaria. The third layer of murals is from the 12th century. It includes depictions of saints the most preserved of which is of St Anthony the Great. The fourth layer of of murals in the Rotund is from the 14th century and includes the painting in the dome depicting Christ Pantocrator. The fifth layer includes very small remains of the period when the church was a mosque (15th c.). At present the Rotund functions as a church. Because of its central location the guests of Sofia have a large choice of hostels, luxury and budget hotels near the Rotund.
